Plant news - the winter garden
The winter garden is a place of ethereal beauty...amazing light, watery sunshine, elegant silhouettes, frost rhymed plants, intensely fragrant flowers, coloured stems and barks, swelling buds and signs of spring to come. The structure of the garden shines through.
For winter fragrance, think viburnums, winter honeysuckle, deutzia, skimmia. For berries,
holly, skimmia. For coloured, interesting barks and stems, cornus. For flowers, hellebores, camellias, snowdrops, muscari.
Winter is also a time for planning for the garden for the coming year. May be designing a new border or creating a vegetable garden or beautiful potager, combining vegetables and fruit with flowers, or even your very own cutting garden, so that you can fill your home with fresh flowers throughout the year, more or less.
And time to start chitting potatoes for the coming season, and if you have a greenhouse or warmth and space, germinating and sowing seeds for the kitchen garden. Sweets peas do better, and are at their most productive, when given an early start.
It's also a time to clear out the potting shed, polish up your tools, and see if you need to invest in any new kit!
PS winter is a time when food foraging for wildlife is at its lowest point, so don't forget to feed welcome garden visitors. We have a fabulous selection bird food and feeders.
