Hanging baskets & planted containers
Spring is the perfect time to refresh all your hanging baskets, window boxes, wall planters and containers. Get creative with your design, colour schemes and in creating some structure within the plantings and, of course, with the selection of your baskets and containers. In fact, you can recyle and convert all manner of items to interesting planters!
Think where your plantings are going to be hung or stand, and if they will be subjected to constant sunshine, or shade, and how easily these can be watered, as this will guide your choice of plants and containers. As will your choice of annual or bedding plants, or something that will last from year to year, such as herbaceous perennials, shrubs, bulbs, heathers and ivy, or may be a mix of both.
Once planted up, your baskets and containers need nurturing from both expected and unexpected frosts and cold winds, and until the plants have grown on and filled out. Keep them well fed and well watered. Hanging baskets in the height of the summer wil particularly benefit from daily watering.
With bedding plants you can change the mood of your garden every year - go from exciting hot reds and oranges, through purples, blues and greys to sophisticated 'all white' schemes.
Sometimes though, its great to go 'old school' with a happy riot of mixed colours!
